Planning to join us in Vancouver for WCA2028, 7–10 May 2028? Check your entry requirements now.

Most international delegates will need either a visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to enter Canada. Some visa applications take several months, so we strongly encourage you to check your requirements early and apply before booking flights.

Your visa checklist

  1. Check whether you need a visa or an eTA
  2. Check processing times for your country
  3. Check transit requirements if connecting through the United States
  4. Book your biometrics appointment, if required
  5. Submit your application as early as possible, at least 12 weeks before travel
  6. Book flights once your visa or eTA is approved

Visa or eTA: which do I need?

Your requirement depends on your nationality and how you are travelling to Canada. Use the official Government of Canada tool to find out.

Processing times

Processing times vary widely by country and can be lengthy. Please review the current times for your country before making any travel plans.

Biometrics

Many visa applicants must provide fingerprints and a photo at an approved location. Allow time for this appointment when planning your application.

How to apply: step-by-step video

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is the Government of Canada department responsible for visas, eTAs and entry to Canada. IRCC has produced a short video guiding you through the application process.

Travelling via the United States

If your journey to Vancouver includes a connection in the United States, you will also need permission to travel through the US, even if you never leave the airport. The US has no visa-free transit option.

  • Citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries can usually transit with an approved ESTA.
  • Citizens of other countries will usually need a US transit (C-1) visa or a valid US visitor visa. This is a separate application from your Canadian visa, with its own processing times.

Airlines check these documents before you board, so please check your full route when booking. If you do not want to apply for US permission, consider flights that connect outside the US.

Arriving in Canada

When you arrive, have the following ready to show border officers:

  • your passport
  • your visa or eTA confirmation
  • your WCA2028 registration confirmation
